things i learned tonight

stan and i have recently chose to forgo cable television. we have chosen a combination of good old-fashioned rabbit ears, an adapter to plug our computer into the television, and apple TV. this has been something i've wanted to do for a long time, and now that stan's dad has remarried and moved out, we finally dove head first into life without cable...and we LOVE it! we were paying $100 a month for HD cable with a DVR and that is NOT including the extra $50 for high-speed internet on top of that. that's absolutely insane. one of the things i hate most about living in an apartment is they force you purchase cable through one provider and since there are no other options, they can charge however much they want and you either pay their price or go without. so we choose to go without. i'll be honest, we watch A LOT of television. we record waaay too many shows than we can actually watch in one week. but we would still save at least $20 a month if we purchased 2 seasons of a show per month. and even though we do watch a lot of television, we don't watch THAT much. and the adapter from the computer to television has been a lifesaver! most of the shows we watch come on the free local channels anyway, so if we miss a show one night, we can hook up our computer and watch it online on the "big screen" instead of our little laptop or in an uncomfortable office chair on the iMac.

so with all that being said, here are the two things i learned tonight:

1) how to connect my wii to the internet over wi-fi
2) how to get my tv to pick up local channels with an antenna

neither of these was a small feat. after four days of trying to figure these things out…my brain hurts.
