because i'm bored on the last day of tax season...

thebump.com has a baby morpher where you can upload a picture of mom and dad and it morphs the two into what your baby will look like. it's quite comical, so i thought i'd share their predictions...

the first time i used these two pictures...

 and ended up with...

a dark-skinned, super curly boy. i can assure you, our baby will not look like this!

so next i tried a picture of stan with a lighter background and less of a funky glare on his face. take 2...

and we ended up with something a little more realistic:

and i did it a third time because i was having waay too much fun. this time with a picture of me with straight hair...

and we ended up with a ghetto fabulous baby. ya know, because they couldn't post a picture of the baby wearing earrings, they decided to picture him with a hood pulled up over his head!

i know you couldn't have possibly enjoyed that as much as i have, but i hope you got a few laughs out of it!

let the wedding festivities begin!

no, not mine silly. been there, done that!

however, our sweet friend is getting married in less than TWO months! how insane is that?! i can still remember finding out her fiance, B, was going to pop the question and (im)patiently waiting for her phone call! i was so excited for her! she is marrying a wonderful man and he is probably one of the luckiest guys i know. ya know, besides stan of course...

well, last saturday the wedding festivities officially began! she had her first bridal shower. unfortunately, i had to work until 3:00 and i missed out on a super fun game involving photobooth props (i'm a sucker for those) but the shower was beautiful and i had a good time for the last half of it! she got tons of great stuff to stock their new home together.

a couple weekends ago, they stopped by our place to pick up a key. if you haven't put two and two together, they are the couple who moved in to our apartment complex only a couple buildings over from us. and stan is officiating their big day! anyway, carli was talking about how she wanted to start collecting random dishes and i couldn't help but show her my beauties i have collected since christmas. it's not a huge collection, but it's getting there. ironically, braden was totally on board. you see, b doesn't have any dishes from his bachelor days and carli used china she got from her grandmother as her every day dishes. b was NOT a huge fan of that. so much that he gave carli free reign to start her own collection! lucky gal ;)

of course we had to take a trip to anthro to start stocking her kitchen with cute dinnerware! here she is opening up the gifts i got her. pictured is a super cute apron i picked out for her!

so cute that i wanted to purchase one for myself too! i'm a sucker for stripes these days ;)

and here's a photo of me and my 20-week belly with the guest of honor! thanks carli for posting these photos on facebook so i can steal them!

Cinco de Mayo, her sweet mom is hosting a wedding crafting party to help make the wedding and reception decor. i love crafting so this is right up my alley! i am so excited!!
can. not. wait! 53 days until they walk down the aisle!!!

oh, and just so i can give my amazing husband some cred, he did let me purchase an apron for myself. and a kitchen timer. and a new potholder and glove. i know, he's pretty darn awesome! and a sucker for making me happy :) i love him!

done and done!

so, we checked off a few baby to-do's from our list this weekend! short story: we registered, we FINALLY settled on a stroller, we decided on bedding/decor for the nursery and we ordered curtains! keep reading if you care for the long story, complete with pictures...

i have been all over craigslist (seriously, every single day--sometimes two or three times!) looking for a deep discount on a stroller. i have been looking at the baby jogger city select, the uppababy vista and the britax b-ready. i chose these three because they have the option of adding a second seat to the stroller for future kiddos. they are all pretty pricey strollers, but i figured if it lasted me through all our kiddos, it would be so worth it!

well, the only luck i had was finding the britax b-ready with the second seat for $400. it belonged to a grandma and was purchased last july (less than 1 year ago) and was hardly used. i emailed her right away and it was still available and i was so close to buying it. until i found a brand new one online for $340. i asked the seller if she would go down to $300, but she said the lowest she would go was $375 so i decided i would rather have a brand new one and spend less money. granted, it doesn't come with the second seat attachment, but i won't need that for a while anyway...hopefully!

however, i was still on the fence about what brand i REALLY wanted. my favorite was the baby jogger city select because i liked the placement of the second seat (in the front), but i hated that the bassinet was not a separate frame, which is a lot of the reason why i'm looking at this style of stroller to begin with (along with the option to expand). i liked the look of the uppababy and it had great reviews, but a lot of mixed feelings on the rumble seat (the add-on attachment for another child). i was already sold on a britax car seat, and the idea of my "travel system" being cohesive  made the britax b-ready much more appealing. stan and i had planned to register at buy buy baby saturday since we finally knew we were having a boy, so i thought i would take a deeper look at them all while we were there, versus internet searching which is what i have been doing for 3 months now!

which brings me to the first thing we checked off our list--REGISTERING! this is one of my FAVORITE things to do. i had so much fun registering when we were engaged and this was no different! of course stan had control of the gun and i didn't get to scan one thing! by the time we made it through the whole store we were exhausted! we had planned to go see a movie, but instead we went home and decided to purchase our stroller! in the store we finally decided on the britax b-ready and we're so excited!

so, number two: we purchased our stroller! it turns out, the stroller was $370 (not $340) at a store called right start, but i had a $10 off coupon for signing up on their email list. only it wasn't valid on sale items. that was a bummer. but then i saw if you create a registry, you get 10% store credit towards a future purchase for everything that is purchased off of your registry. AND they have better prices than buy buy baby so i moved a lot of my big ticket items over to that store in hopes that i would have a nice little credit to get the little things that people don't want to buy because they aren't as fun. so long story short, this is what we ended up with!

we would have rather had the all black, but the twilight (or tan) color was on sale for a cheaper price so we went with that!
this is what it will look like for the first few months with the bassinet attachment (before baby can sit up and control his neck). i can't wait to take walks in our neighborhood pushing a baby in this bad boy!
and these are all of the configurations that can be done with ONE stroller. crazy, huh?!

we also settled on nursery decor! we had been playing with the idea of a nautical/sailor or travel "theme." we don't want it to be too "theme-y" but we do want it to be cohesive. i found some fabric online on sunday that i really liked for the blanket. we saw some bedding at buy buy baby (that was ridiculously overpriced) so i'll base the style loosely off of the blanket that came with the bedding. it's kind of a duvet style, which won't be used until the baby is older anyway, but it will be super cute draped over the side of the crib until he's actually using his crib!

here's a picture of the blanket if you care to see what i'm hoping the finished product will look like:

it's kind of hard to tell from the picture but it's fluffy and it has piping. it's less quilt like, although it is tacked down in a few places to keep all the layers in place. shouldn't be too hard but it will be my first time to take a stab at piping!

lastly, we ordered curtains from urban outfitters! i got an email about new sale items added and they were the right price! there are two windows in the nursery, one large double window and one single window so i knew whatever curtains i bought/made would have to be pretty inexpensive! this is what we ended up with! i love them :)

anyway, that's it for now! i am planning on purchasing a bunch of different fabrics to make sheets, bumpers, pillows, changing pad covers, etc. i've found quite a bit of stuff i like but i need to run it by stan and see what his favorite is! i'll let you know as we get to that point!

gender reveal--it's a....

 we're having a boy--and we're so excited!
i mean, can't you tell by those AMAZINGLY sexy facial expressions?!
please allow me a vain moment?!
check out those legs :)
i guess now would be as good a time as any to introduce our baby BOY...
darrell cash rhoden!

we are thrilled we are going to be parents of a little boy. i'm in a lot of trouble, you know, having two stanley's running around! we knew if we had a boy we wanted to name him after stan's dad, darrell. and we wanted to keep the same middle initial 'c' so, naturally, we went with stan's favorite musician, johnny cash!

we had a sweet friend photograph the event, so i will share all the details (food, drinks, decor, etc) when we get the dvd in the mail! she had them all edited a couple days after the party! she was absolutely wonderful!! i can't wait to see them and share the deets with you all! until then...

a new zip code and other random happenings, part 2

excuse me while i catch my breath from that last post. i should REALLY update this thing more often. where were we? oh yeah, our life outside of baby Rhoden…

march 24th marked moving day to dallas! we actually picked the keys up on the 23rd and stan packed up all of our clothes and dropped them off after school when he picked up the keys. then he drove back to the apartment and gathered his boss, brandon and some amazing college kids from church and packed up a church van full of stuff. our plan was to set up our office space, build our two bookshelves we purchased from ikea, put all of our clothes away, organize our storage space on the balcony with all of our tools (ya know…circular saws, chop saws, jig saws, pneumatic nailers…the norm for apartment life!) and whatever else they were able to cram inside the van. things didn’t go exactly as planned. we did manage to get everything out of the van and into the apartment. ha.

the main issue arose when we realized the space we picked to set up our “office” was not going to work out. even with downsizing our living room furniture (more on that later) it just was not going to fit. bummer. so we went with plan b, which was to put it next to the fireplace, where we had planned to put the record player. and we’ll put the record player in the nursery/guest bedroom. not ideal, but it will work. after that, we just ran out of time. i did manage to get all of our clothes hung up in the closet. and one bookshelf built.

saturday morning the movers came and had everything loaded, moved and unloaded by 11:00 am. amazing! shortly after i got home from work, stan’s mom and step dad came over to bring us food and help mount our television above the fireplace. insert issue #2 here. there aren’t any studs in the wall above the fireplace. crap! after some brainstorming, we decided on a solution to fix the problem and we are going to try to make it look more like an intentional art piece and less like a solution to a major problem. i'll let you know how it goes once we follow through with the plan…

i currently feel like all we do is unpack, yet it looks as if we haven’t even started yet! here are some of the projects we’ve been tackling other than unpacking boxes…or in order to be able to unpack boxes!

well, this isn’t really a project…i just wanted to show off our new furniture! i thought these would both for sure fit in our living room, but it is an awkward shape and we couldn't make it work so we ended up putting the chair in our bedroom next to a built in bookcase, as a little reading nook. it will also be nice for those few months where baby is in our bedroom and i don't want to go to the nursery to feed.

this dresser. I don’t even know where to begin. we purchased this dresser along with two matching nightstands from an older couple through craigslist. it had definitely seen it’s better days. i wish i could find a before picture of these bad boys because, wow it was bad! i spent an entire week trying to strip them—unsuccessfully I might add—almost 3 years ago. and then they just sat in our garage everywhere we went because i wasn’t brave enough to start tackling them again. our intention was to sell our current bedroom furniture and refinish the dresser and nightstands, and use it as our own. well, fast forward a few years and we FINALLY sold our furniture! yay. unfortunately, that meant we had no where to put our clothes. ya know, the little things like socks and underwear! we have worked out butts off over the past week to finish the dresser. it didn’t turn out as smooth as i'd hoped, but it was a labor of love and our first piece of furniture to refinish together so it is perfect to me! and if i'm honest, stan did most of the work. ya know, since i'm with child and all. i helped as much as i could and just wore a mask but he did most of the stripping, all of the sanding and most of the painting. i painted the drawers. that's it! here's the finished dresser:

the color is a grayish with a blue tint to it. we still need to buy knobs or handles, but we haven't found anything we liked yet. i think we are planning to go to anthropologie at some point and pick up some mismatched hardware. up next are the nightstands…but we don’t mind waiting a few weeks on those. we are burnt out on refinishing furniture! and we don’t really use our nightstands to store anything anyway—just to hold a lamp and a cup of water. which it does perfectly fine how it is!

while we were refinishing the dresser, i decided it would be a great time to do this:

i stained four crates i purchased a while back with the intention of building a shelving unit, similar to this:

like most of the projects i start or purchase supplies for (living room curtains, anyone?!), it didn’t get done at the old place. BUT! i finally made it happen at the new place and we love it. we found two old, beat up wooden crates at an estate sale and i painted the outside blue and we had them stacked in our old place and decorated. well, we decided to leave two of the crates i purchased unfinished and mix in the blue crates also. here's what it looks like, undecorated:

once we finish decorating them i will take an after picture! currently, they are just stacked on top of each other. but before the baby starts crawling, we plan to attach them together and tether the entire unit to the wall, so if the bambino pulls on it, it doesn't come tumbling down.

tonight we are planning to hang our picture ledges and straighten up the guest room. my sister and her boyfriend are going to be staying over and they kinda need a place to sleep! my parents are going to have a full house, LITERALLY, with my brother, sister-in-law, their son mason, their baby grayson, my sisters' two kids, and her boyfriends' kid. WOW. four adults, a teenager, three kids, a baby, two dogs and a cat. in 1300 square feet.

tomorrow night is the gender reveal! we are going to the early service at church sunday. followed by easter at my parents. and then easter at stan's dad's. but i'm so excited to see family i don't get to see very often! i haven't see my brother in 18 months! i saw his wife and kids last june so that was nice. but once a year is not enough! i'm so glad we'll be going to visit them in italy in may!

in news other than moving...

stan is finishing up his second to last semester at dallas baptist university! he was notified by one of his professors that he was awarded an honors scholarship--so proud of him! aaaand then we received the official notification in the mail and we can't accept the scholarship because it is conditional upon the assumption that he will be attending DBU in the fall AND spring semesters. what a bummer! i found out in february that i failed the audit portion of the CPA exam again. so i'll be going for round 3 in may. and subsequently, i lost credit for the business and economics portion since my rolling 18 months expires in june. that was really disappointing.to be honest, i really struggle with whether or not i even want this for myself. which is definitely revealed with my priorities regarding this test. i don't think it's something that i TRULY want and so i don't make it a priority. and that needs to change. i don't want to do this. but i know there's a purpose behind it and i know that if i persevere, it will open up opportunities that i want for myself.

like i mentioned earlier, we are planning a vacation in may to visit my brother and his family in italy! we'll be spending 10 days with them. i cannot wait! i've never been out of the country unless you count mexico/the caribbean, which i don't. my mom will most likely be going with us! it should be a good time! i can't really think of anything else that's new so i guess that is it for now! maybe sunday i'll work on a pregnancy update!

a new zip code and other random happenings, part 1

wow. it's been way too long. i know i promise to blog more and i keep failing at that! let me just say that moving during tax season while pregnant was a bad idea. since so much has happened, i'll start with all things baby related in this post and follow up with the rest of our life in another post later today!

so what's been going on with the Rhodens?! i'm glad you asked...

first of all, i'm so excited to share that baby Rhoden will have FOUR friends so close to his or her age. we found out in the past 6 weeks that four of our friends are pregnant and having their second child. how crazy is that?! i'm so glad that we will be close(ER) for play dates and such. i don't think any of them have announced it yet, so i won't share who, but baby Rhoden is lucky because these friends are so dear and special to us and i know their children will be just as awesome as their parents are!

i have had my eye on a particular style of a petunia pickle bottom diaper bag for a while now. i have several friends who have a PPB bag and swear by it. i knew i wanted the sashay satchel style and i had originally planned to purchase one off of ebay, since i wasn't about to pay over $100 for a diaper bag. i registered my email address on their outlet website over 6 months ago (yes, before we even decided to start a family) and kind of forgot about it. well, in early march i received an email about their upcoming outlet sale. they only do this twice a year and it took me 4 hours to finally place the order and then another two days before i got confirmation that i did in fact get my order placed in time to get the bag before they sold out of the style i wanted, but lo and behold! friday, march 16th this gal came in the mail! i got her 50% off and could not be happier! i was hoping i would find out the gender of baby Rhoden before they had an outlet sale but that didn't happen. i almost decided not to get anything since i wasn't sure if we were having a girl or boy, but later decided this would be replacing my purse and it really didn't need to match the baby, only me :) i am so happy i decided to go for it! i'm in LOVE!

i got her 50% off and could not be happier! i was hoping i would find out the gender of baby Rhoden before they had an outlet sale but that didn't happen. i almost decided not to get anything since i wasn't sure if we were having a girl or boy, but later decided this would be replacing my purse and it really didn't need to match the baby, only me :) i am so happy i decided to go for it! i'm in LOVE! unfortunately, it's an addiction and i now want an wistful weekender. if only i could find the same one to match my (discontinued) diaper bag...wah waaah.

on march 17th, i went with my parents and stan's mom to a huge consignment sale in plano. my brother and his wife and children are coming in town (TODAY!) to visit for a couple weeks and go to brandy's sister's wedding in VEGAS and their new baby Grayson is going to be staying with my mom for FIVE DAYS! my mom has not kept an infant for five days in at least twelve years! yikes! all that to say, she needed some baby gear...and fast! she managed to find a highchair, an umbrella stroller, a few toys, some puzzles and games on the cheap at this place. stan's mom scored an umbrella stroller, some toys/puzzles, and a johnny jumper for an amazing deal.and i scored a cute tummy time mat and a baby carrier for stan (and me--but mostly stan). i found the same carrier brand new at buy buy baby for $129! i scored this bad boy for $18. well, my dad scored it for $18. i subsequently got it for free :) thanks dad!

afterwards, we stopped by buy buy baby so i could show them the crib stan and i decided on. i had originally though i wanted a simple clean lined, modern crib such as this:

but while browsing buy buy baby one day for gliders, we came across this brand new style crib from bassett baby.

i love the simple style while still being a little different. you can't tell from the pictures, but it almost looks like a gray wash over white paint. it would work well for a boy or a girl. it is also convertible. it goes from a crib to a toddler bed with rails:

to a toddler day-ish bed:

to a full size bed:

and it's from a quality furniture company so i know it will last a long time. and best of all, with a 20% off coupon (thanks buy buy baby) it is only $40 more than the simple, cheap crib from target i had been looking at! score!!

on march 29th, we had our 18-22 week appointment with our perinatologist. we actually saw one of his partners and she was so sweet. she asked us ahead of time if we wanted to know the gender and we told her we'd like it in an envelope and what our plans were and she was so nice to accommodate our request! baby Rhoden was being extra stubborn that day and WOULD. NOT. MOVE. we couldn't get baby to stay still during the first appointment and this time we needed him/her to flip over and baby would just not cooperate.the doctor needed a different view of the heart and cross-section of the stomach and we tried just about everything. she jiggled my belly with the want, she had me roll to one side and then to the other. NOTHING. in the end she was able to get what she needed i guess because she let us know we needed to look away from the screen because she was going to check out the gender of baby Rhoden. i was originally thinking we could go home later that night and watch the recorded sono and make our guesses (because let's be honest, neither of us could pick out anything except the beating heart!) but she was able to tell without a doubt after just a few seconds so i decided it was a bad idea to watch it, in case it really was THAT obvious.

as soon as i got home i hid the envelope but pretended to keep it with me at all times. when we left the appointment i put it in my planner/life binder and didn't let that sucker out of my sight so stan would think it was still in there. i know my husband and he is sneaky and this is the only way i knew i could keep him from searching the apartment for it! fast forward a week and i get a phone call from stan saying he had a confession to make. i immediately thought he found the envelope and opened it. instead he took the dvd out of my planner and watched it! the little turd...

lucky for me, the doctor picked up on the fact that i have a sneaky husband and she cut off the recording just before she checked the gender! crisis averted!!

a few weeks back living social was running a great deal. pay $25 and get $50 to spend at a local cloth diaper shop, called the nappy shoppe. even better, if you purchase the deal and then get 3 other people to purchase it also, yours is free! so i had stan purchase it, as well as my mom and dad. so in the end, i got $200 to spend at the nappy shoppe and only paid $75! we are planning to cloth diaper baby Rhoden. but before you think i'm CRAZY--know that they have come A LONG way since the days of folding and pinning and covering! it is expensive to get started (between $15 and $20 PER DIAPER) but when you compare that to how much you would spend in just the first 3 months ALONE it is so worth it! when all is said and done, i will have a pretty good start to my collection. i will have 12 cloth diapers for roughly $100. i would like to have between two to three dozen. if i were staying home with baby Rhoden, i could probably get away with only two dozen, but i would like to have a dozen that could stay at my mom's house so i wouldn't have to cart them back and forth so often. but hey--that's what a registry is for, right?! well, wednesday night my mom took me out to get an outfit for the gender reveal party and we decided to stop by and use two of our vouchers. here's a picture of two (of the six) that i purchased:

contrary to what it appears, one is black and the other is bright blue (not brown and baby blue). it was dark already when i took this picture, but i was so excited i couldn't wait until the morning when the sun was out! they are the pocket style, meaning there is an opening in the back between the inner and outer layer for a "soaker layer" to fit inside and when the diaper is wet or soiled you pull the soaker out and throw them in the washer. it is also a one-size style. all those snaps allow it to fit all the way from 6 pounds to 35 pounds! meaning one set of diapers will last until baby Rhoden is potty trained! hooray! i purchased 4 of the same style in the picture, and then i purchased two of another brand because the associate said it was especially good to last throughout the night = less diaper changes while i'm barely awake.

in WAY more exciting news, the gender reveal party is less than 36 hours away and i could not be more excited! some super AWESOME friends of ours opened up their home to host the party. how amazing is that?! another sweet friend, Elyse is going to photograph the event. i don't want to give away too much, but it will be a good time! i'll have a separate post after the event to detail everything from the party. i also have some great family members contributing food. i could not have done this without them! I CANNOT WAIT!!!

well, i think that's everything baby related for now. i'll FINALLY do a separate recap post of my pregnancy so far after the party. stay tuned for the rest of the crazy, under construction life we are currently living...
