recent projects

diy jewelry holder:
i stapled chicken wire to the back of a frame and drilled holes for drawer pulls to hang necklaces on. bad news: i already want to do something different so this may end up in my craft room as an inspiration board and i’ll make some cute clothespins to clip ideas to the chicken wire.

yarn wrapped letters:
i think this is pretty self-explanatory.

mason jar soap dispensers:
these were not-so-fun to make. we scored two super old mason jars with lids at first monday in weatherford (think smaller scale first monday in canton) and bought two ugly soap dispensers from ross and attached the pump to the lids of the mason jars. bad news: the waterproof sealant we used is not actually waterproof. so we’ll be going for a round two pretty soon.

diy artwork & frames for our bedroom:
this was one of my favorite projects recently. i bought a map of dfw area and tea-stained it. then i mod podged pieces of it onto two canvases (the thin ones—is that still a canvas?). one has a heart around richardson-where we met, and the other has a heart around kaufman-where we got married. i wrote out my wedding vows to stan and it hangs on his side of the bed and he wrote out his vows to me and it hangs on my side of the bed.
i also made the frame out of 1 x 2 dimensional lumber. i stained it ebony and dry brushed it with whitish-grey paint to make it look weathered.

i’ve done a few other things but failed to take pictures of them. maybe i’ll do that soon…that’s it for now!

introducing...

…my new motivation for productivity:

exciting news: i’m 26 years old and i FINALLY figured out my style!

unfortunate news: i can count on one hand the number of things in our apartment that reflect that style, most of which i DIY-ed recently.

so in light of my recent discovery, and to make the task of decorating our apartment less daunting, i have created a project jar. some of the projects are small, such as recovering the seats on two chairs we thrifted. some are huge, such as recovering our couch pillows or sewing lined curtains. the large projects are broken down into 4-5 steps to do one at a time in hopes that they will get done faster…instead of feeling like i have to do it all at once. plus there’s that small factor of time, in which i have VERY LITTLE due to the CPA exam. so these are little things i can do here and there to slowly transform our living quarters. i’m sure just in time to move somewhere else, but hopefully that somewhere else will be a loft space (in downtown dallas maybe) and then it will all be worth it!

things i learned tonight

stan and i have recently chose to forgo cable television. we have chosen a combination of good old-fashioned rabbit ears, an adapter to plug our computer into the television, and apple TV. this has been something i've wanted to do for a long time, and now that stan's dad has remarried and moved out, we finally dove head first into life without cable...and we LOVE it! we were paying $100 a month for HD cable with a DVR and that is NOT including the extra $50 for high-speed internet on top of that. that's absolutely insane. one of the things i hate most about living in an apartment is they force you purchase cable through one provider and since there are no other options, they can charge however much they want and you either pay their price or go without. so we choose to go without. i'll be honest, we watch A LOT of television. we record waaay too many shows than we can actually watch in one week. but we would still save at least $20 a month if we purchased 2 seasons of a show per month. and even though we do watch a lot of television, we don't watch THAT much. and the adapter from the computer to television has been a lifesaver! most of the shows we watch come on the free local channels anyway, so if we miss a show one night, we can hook up our computer and watch it online on the "big screen" instead of our little laptop or in an uncomfortable office chair on the iMac.

so with all that being said, here are the two things i learned tonight:

1) how to connect my wii to the internet over wi-fi
2) how to get my tv to pick up local channels with an antenna

neither of these was a small feat. after four days of trying to figure these things out…my brain hurts.
