because i'm bored on the last day of tax season...

thebump.com has a baby morpher where you can upload a picture of mom and dad and it morphs the two into what your baby will look like. it's quite comical, so i thought i'd share their predictions...

the first time i used these two pictures...

 and ended up with...

a dark-skinned, super curly boy. i can assure you, our baby will not look like this!

so next i tried a picture of stan with a lighter background and less of a funky glare on his face. take 2...

and we ended up with something a little more realistic:

and i did it a third time because i was having waay too much fun. this time with a picture of me with straight hair...

and we ended up with a ghetto fabulous baby. ya know, because they couldn't post a picture of the baby wearing earrings, they decided to picture him with a hood pulled up over his head!

i know you couldn't have possibly enjoyed that as much as i have, but i hope you got a few laughs out of it!

a new zip code and other random happenings, part 2

excuse me while i catch my breath from that last post. i should REALLY update this thing more often. where were we? oh yeah, our life outside of baby Rhoden…

march 24th marked moving day to dallas! we actually picked the keys up on the 23rd and stan packed up all of our clothes and dropped them off after school when he picked up the keys. then he drove back to the apartment and gathered his boss, brandon and some amazing college kids from church and packed up a church van full of stuff. our plan was to set up our office space, build our two bookshelves we purchased from ikea, put all of our clothes away, organize our storage space on the balcony with all of our tools (ya know…circular saws, chop saws, jig saws, pneumatic nailers…the norm for apartment life!) and whatever else they were able to cram inside the van. things didn’t go exactly as planned. we did manage to get everything out of the van and into the apartment. ha.

the main issue arose when we realized the space we picked to set up our “office” was not going to work out. even with downsizing our living room furniture (more on that later) it just was not going to fit. bummer. so we went with plan b, which was to put it next to the fireplace, where we had planned to put the record player. and we’ll put the record player in the nursery/guest bedroom. not ideal, but it will work. after that, we just ran out of time. i did manage to get all of our clothes hung up in the closet. and one bookshelf built.

saturday morning the movers came and had everything loaded, moved and unloaded by 11:00 am. amazing! shortly after i got home from work, stan’s mom and step dad came over to bring us food and help mount our television above the fireplace. insert issue #2 here. there aren’t any studs in the wall above the fireplace. crap! after some brainstorming, we decided on a solution to fix the problem and we are going to try to make it look more like an intentional art piece and less like a solution to a major problem. i'll let you know how it goes once we follow through with the plan…

i currently feel like all we do is unpack, yet it looks as if we haven’t even started yet! here are some of the projects we’ve been tackling other than unpacking boxes…or in order to be able to unpack boxes!

well, this isn’t really a project…i just wanted to show off our new furniture! i thought these would both for sure fit in our living room, but it is an awkward shape and we couldn't make it work so we ended up putting the chair in our bedroom next to a built in bookcase, as a little reading nook. it will also be nice for those few months where baby is in our bedroom and i don't want to go to the nursery to feed.

this dresser. I don’t even know where to begin. we purchased this dresser along with two matching nightstands from an older couple through craigslist. it had definitely seen it’s better days. i wish i could find a before picture of these bad boys because, wow it was bad! i spent an entire week trying to strip them—unsuccessfully I might add—almost 3 years ago. and then they just sat in our garage everywhere we went because i wasn’t brave enough to start tackling them again. our intention was to sell our current bedroom furniture and refinish the dresser and nightstands, and use it as our own. well, fast forward a few years and we FINALLY sold our furniture! yay. unfortunately, that meant we had no where to put our clothes. ya know, the little things like socks and underwear! we have worked out butts off over the past week to finish the dresser. it didn’t turn out as smooth as i'd hoped, but it was a labor of love and our first piece of furniture to refinish together so it is perfect to me! and if i'm honest, stan did most of the work. ya know, since i'm with child and all. i helped as much as i could and just wore a mask but he did most of the stripping, all of the sanding and most of the painting. i painted the drawers. that's it! here's the finished dresser:

the color is a grayish with a blue tint to it. we still need to buy knobs or handles, but we haven't found anything we liked yet. i think we are planning to go to anthropologie at some point and pick up some mismatched hardware. up next are the nightstands…but we don’t mind waiting a few weeks on those. we are burnt out on refinishing furniture! and we don’t really use our nightstands to store anything anyway—just to hold a lamp and a cup of water. which it does perfectly fine how it is!

while we were refinishing the dresser, i decided it would be a great time to do this:

i stained four crates i purchased a while back with the intention of building a shelving unit, similar to this:

like most of the projects i start or purchase supplies for (living room curtains, anyone?!), it didn’t get done at the old place. BUT! i finally made it happen at the new place and we love it. we found two old, beat up wooden crates at an estate sale and i painted the outside blue and we had them stacked in our old place and decorated. well, we decided to leave two of the crates i purchased unfinished and mix in the blue crates also. here's what it looks like, undecorated:

once we finish decorating them i will take an after picture! currently, they are just stacked on top of each other. but before the baby starts crawling, we plan to attach them together and tether the entire unit to the wall, so if the bambino pulls on it, it doesn't come tumbling down.

tonight we are planning to hang our picture ledges and straighten up the guest room. my sister and her boyfriend are going to be staying over and they kinda need a place to sleep! my parents are going to have a full house, LITERALLY, with my brother, sister-in-law, their son mason, their baby grayson, my sisters' two kids, and her boyfriends' kid. WOW. four adults, a teenager, three kids, a baby, two dogs and a cat. in 1300 square feet.

tomorrow night is the gender reveal! we are going to the early service at church sunday. followed by easter at my parents. and then easter at stan's dad's. but i'm so excited to see family i don't get to see very often! i haven't see my brother in 18 months! i saw his wife and kids last june so that was nice. but once a year is not enough! i'm so glad we'll be going to visit them in italy in may!

in news other than moving...

stan is finishing up his second to last semester at dallas baptist university! he was notified by one of his professors that he was awarded an honors scholarship--so proud of him! aaaand then we received the official notification in the mail and we can't accept the scholarship because it is conditional upon the assumption that he will be attending DBU in the fall AND spring semesters. what a bummer! i found out in february that i failed the audit portion of the CPA exam again. so i'll be going for round 3 in may. and subsequently, i lost credit for the business and economics portion since my rolling 18 months expires in june. that was really disappointing.to be honest, i really struggle with whether or not i even want this for myself. which is definitely revealed with my priorities regarding this test. i don't think it's something that i TRULY want and so i don't make it a priority. and that needs to change. i don't want to do this. but i know there's a purpose behind it and i know that if i persevere, it will open up opportunities that i want for myself.

like i mentioned earlier, we are planning a vacation in may to visit my brother and his family in italy! we'll be spending 10 days with them. i cannot wait! i've never been out of the country unless you count mexico/the caribbean, which i don't. my mom will most likely be going with us! it should be a good time! i can't really think of anything else that's new so i guess that is it for now! maybe sunday i'll work on a pregnancy update!

43 days

mornings like i experienced today make it seem like we are still light years away from moving. we finally found a place to live IN DALLAS and scheduled with the movers yesterday! march 24th. 43 days away. in 43 days we will be residents of dallas. in 43 days i will no longer fight traffic or wonder whether my drive will take 45 minutes or an hour and 45 minutes. in 43 days i will be a mere 17 miles from my job. i.am.stoked.

we found some pretty nice apartments on cedar springs with a huge dog park. we're about a mile away from the katy trail and close to some really nice parks. it's a two-bedroom, two-bath with a separate dining room and a huge corner balcony! more than anything though, i am excited because our soon-to-be-married friends, carli & braden, are moving in to the same complex! they also have a rather large dog and we are so excited for our furr-babies to play together.

it will also be nice to have such a good friend so close during the summer while stan is away so much. in june, he has two weeks of camps in tyler, tx and will be home for a mere 7 days and then leaves again to washington, d.c. for a youth choir tour. he gets home and a week and a half later is off to a college retreat and then 4 days after that is the student ministry all nighter. and somewhere in between all of that, they still have a senior trip to plan and execute during the summer months. i'm not even sure when they will find time to schedule it. last year i had some flexibility and was able to attend some of the functions, but between our trip to italy in may and needing to save as much vacation/overtime for maternity leave i need to be stingy with time taken off. not to mention the fact that i will have a basketball growing from my midsection.

as much as i have LOVED living near downtown fort worth and exploring a new city--i am thrilled to be coming home. i have always lived in the dallas area, but never IN DALLAS so this will still be a new adventure. the only sad thing to be leaving behind is our old place. stan's dad lived with us for 9 months and once he moved out we took over the third bedroom. it's going to be sad to be giving that space up and challenging to fit everything we have PLUS a baby (and all the things that come with it) into just two bedrooms. however, i am confident that we can make it happen. stan's desk will live against a wall behind the couch in the living room and all of my sewing/craft stuff will be organized in the baby's closet--ya know, since their clothes will only hang about 2 feet down and all. i love woodworking and building things (like stan's desk) and i am hoping we can fit the must-have-handy tools in the storage off the patio and still have some space to work since it is so large. of course this all works out in my head, but it's quite different when you are actually putting everything away so we'll see. i AM excited about downsizing and simplifying. i only want things i LOVE in the new place and i want everything to have it's place. so if i don't have anywhere to put it--it's outta here! someone please keep me accountable to that! haha. and i am COMMITTED to actually FINISHING bedrooms here. i'll give you five dollars for every time you come over and i haven't decorated a room yet. well, after tax season ends anyway...

my not-so-green thumb

when we moved our offices to a new building last august, there was a company who was moving out and selling the plants they had so they didn't have to transport them or trash them. since i'm too cheap to buy a plant myself, i happily accepted the offer our company was making to purchase the plants if we wanted one or two for our office.

i chose a plant that only had to be watered ONCE A MONTH. that's like a guaranty that it cannot be killed, right?!

WRONG!

here is a succession of pictures that chronicles the life of my plant:

I'm guessing gardening is not my forte.

things i learned tonight

stan and i have recently chose to forgo cable television. we have chosen a combination of good old-fashioned rabbit ears, an adapter to plug our computer into the television, and apple TV. this has been something i've wanted to do for a long time, and now that stan's dad has remarried and moved out, we finally dove head first into life without cable...and we LOVE it! we were paying $100 a month for HD cable with a DVR and that is NOT including the extra $50 for high-speed internet on top of that. that's absolutely insane. one of the things i hate most about living in an apartment is they force you purchase cable through one provider and since there are no other options, they can charge however much they want and you either pay their price or go without. so we choose to go without. i'll be honest, we watch A LOT of television. we record waaay too many shows than we can actually watch in one week. but we would still save at least $20 a month if we purchased 2 seasons of a show per month. and even though we do watch a lot of television, we don't watch THAT much. and the adapter from the computer to television has been a lifesaver! most of the shows we watch come on the free local channels anyway, so if we miss a show one night, we can hook up our computer and watch it online on the "big screen" instead of our little laptop or in an uncomfortable office chair on the iMac.

so with all that being said, here are the two things i learned tonight:

1) how to connect my wii to the internet over wi-fi
2) how to get my tv to pick up local channels with an antenna

neither of these was a small feat. after four days of trying to figure these things out…my brain hurts.

dear impatient blonde speeding on george bush,

believe it or not, i was you once upon a time. in fact, if i’m not paying attention every moment i’m driving, i still am. with that being said:

1. get off my rear end. yes, i am in the fast lane. i am also going fast (according to cops, but probably not you)—5 over the speed limit to be exact.

2. quit motioning for me to move lanes. if you want to drive 90, then move your (not-so) happy little bum AROUND ME. there are three lanes and i’m entitled to choose which one i would like to drive in. stop being lazy and stop thinking you own the road.

if you are going drive at a ridiculously unsafe speed, then you can at least have the decency to avoid other people and not leave it up to us to avoid you. thanks and have a super day.

sincerely,

the red-head with way too many tickets in her past

this describes me *almost* to a T

i stumbled upon a blog with a review of a book titled The Introvert Advantage: How To Thrive in an Extrovert World, by Marti Laney, Psy.D. the writer of the blog, Carl King, put together this list of common misconceptions about introverts. most of this is true about me...

Myth #1 – Introverts don’t like to talk.
This is not true. Introverts just don’t talk unless they have something to say. They hate small talk. Get an introvert talking about something they are interested in, and they won’t shut up for days.

Myth #2 – Introverts are shy.
Shyness has nothing to do with being an Introvert. Introverts are not necessarily afraid of people. What they need is a reason to interact. They don’t interact for the sake of interacting. If you want to talk to an Introvert, just start talking. Don’t worry about being polite.

Myth #3 – Introverts are rude.
Introverts often don’t see a reason for beating around the bush with social pleasantries. They want everyone to just be real and honest. Unfortunately, this is not acceptable in most settings, so Introverts can feel a lot of pressure to fit in, which they find exhausting.

Myth #4 – Introverts don’t like people.
On the contrary, Introverts intensely value the few friends they have. They can count their close friends on one hand. If you are lucky enough for an introvert to consider you a friend, you probably have a loyal ally for life. Once you have earned their respect as being a person of substance, you’re in.

Myth #5 – Introverts don’t like to go out in public.
Nonsense. Introverts just don’t like to go out in public FOR AS LONG. They also like to avoid the complications that are involved in public activities. They take in data and experiences very quickly, and as a result, don’t need to be there for long to “get it.” They’re ready to go home, recharge, and process it all. In fact, recharging is absolutely crucial for Introverts.

Myth #6 – Introverts always want to be alone.
Introverts are perfectly comfortable with their own thoughts. They think a lot. They daydream. They like to have problems to work on, puzzles to solve. But they can also get incredibly lonely if they don’t have anyone to share their discoveries with. They crave an authentic and sincere connection with ONE PERSON at a time.

Myth #7 – Introverts are weird.
Introverts are often individualists. They don’t follow the crowd. They’d prefer to be valued for their novel ways of living. They think for themselves and because of that, they often challenge the norm. They don’t make most decisions based on what is popular or trendy.

Myth #8 – Introverts are aloof nerds.
Introverts are people who primarily look inward, paying close attention to their thoughts and emotions. It’s not that they are incapable of paying attention to what is going on around them, it’s just that their inner world is much more stimulating and rewarding to them.

Myth #9 – Introverts don’t know how to relax and have fun.
Introverts typically relax at home or in nature, not in busy public places. Introverts are not thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies (I think this is the only sentence that does not fit me). If there is too much talking and noise going on, they shut down. Their brains are too sensitive to the neurotransmitter called Dopamine. Introverts and Extroverts have different dominant neuro-pathways. Just look it up.

Myth #10 – Introverts can fix themselves and become Extroverts.
A world without Introverts would be a world with few scientists, musicians, artists, poets, filmmakers, doctors, mathematicians, writers, and philosophers. That being said, there are still plenty of techniques an Extrovert can learn in order to interact with Introverts. (Yes, I reversed these two terms on purpose to show you how biased our society is.) Introverts cannot “fix themselves” and deserve respect for their natural temperament and contributions to the human race. In fact, one study (Silverman, 1986) showed that the percentage of Introverts increases with IQ.

on being productive

15 hours later, our office is FINALLY clean. for the first time since we moved in. seven months ago. we still have a LONG way to go as far as decor goes and making it aesthetically appealing. but it’s a HUGE accomplishment that we can now see the floor! I’m not even kidding. unfortunately I did not get a before picture. i don’t think you can appreciate all the hard work without a before shot, but basically we took EVERYTHING out of the room and moved it back in piece by piece until it was all put away or thrown away!

we also made some awesome mason jar soap pumps. we bought the vintage jars at first monday trade days in weatherford at the beginning of the month and we finally had time to make them. yay!

in january i cut the wood to make rustic wood frames, and today i finally put the frames together and stained them. tomorrow i’m going to dry brush them with a whitish grey color. i can’t wait to put them on our walls in the bedroom!

coming soon: more info on the mason jars and frames! hopefully i’ll be able to craft and blog a lot more now that tax season is over!

for now: i’m going to bed! goodnight friends.

yes, that WAS my dream last night

so, i’m 0 for 2 on making it to morning yoga this week. yesterday morning i was late because of the road conditions. this morning i was too busy dreaming about growing an extra tooth at the age of 24 (i guess i forgot my 25th birthday had already passed). and apparently an extra tooth meant that i was a flying squirrel, and not a human like i had thought for the past 25 24 years.

speaking of…i had one of these bad boys when stan and i met. her name was gabby. she was the cutest thing ever.

Can’t believe I’m breaking my no Christmas before thanksgiving rule...
